Walks Camp Park

July 03, 2015  •  Leave a Comment

One of my regular stops is this oasis of tall trees and native prairie grass along the Arikaree River north of Limon Colorado. Established as a buffalo hunting camp for the Walk brothers in 1872 it later became a key stop along the National Trail for driving cattle from Texas to Montana. In the early 20th century homesteaders began settling nearby and in 1913 the Walks Camp Park Association organized and purchased the land where today it remains a local gathering ground for picnics and events. On this foggy morning I can almost feel the history!
